Why Walk For The Book Fairies?

FACT: Strong Literacy Skills + A Love of Reading = Better Opportunities.

The Book Fairies' mission is to use literacy as a tool to help break the cycle of poverty by increasing access to high-interest books to those who need it most through donations of upcycled reading materials.

*********************************************************

Many schools in high-need districts in Long Island and the metropolitan area have no libraries in their buildings or bookshelves in their classrooms. Avid reader and parent Amy Zaslansky refused to accept this disparity when she found out a school in a neighboring district had this problem.  She ran her first book drive in 2012 and collected over 3,000 children's books; The Book Fairies was created!

With over 1,300,000 books donated  to date, the demand for our services increases each year.  After coordinating book drives with individuals, schools, businesses and organizations, we donate back out as many books as possible to the community.  The Book Fairies host monthly educator book fairs where teachers in high-need districts take over 15,000 books in three hours to build classroom libraries and send home books with their students.  We supply books to community organizations that serve disadvantaged populations like homeless shelters, soup kitchens and hospitals.  We provide free books to children in need through book fairs and summer reading programs.

Funds raised through Books4All 5K will help us reach our goal in providing over 500,000 books to those who need it most in 2018.  Walk for us to help change children's stories...one book at a time!
